Gwinnett County Responders and MMRS Introduction Meeting

Atlanta Georgia MMRS

The Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) Program began in 1996 and currently is funded by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The primary focus of the MMRS program is to develop or enhance existing emergency preparedness systems to effectively respond to a public health crisis, especially a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) event. Through preparation and coordination, local law enforcement, fire, hazmat, EMS, hospital, public health, and other "first response" personnel plan to more effectively respond in the first 48 hours of a public health crisis. Formed initially in 1995, Atlanta and Washington DC were the first MMRS Jurisidcitions nationally. After being a development model for an extended period, Altanta was fully funded three years ago and today is the largest MMRS in land mass covered.

DataFM technology was selected for use by the Atlanta MMRS for notification and coordination of information to participating agencies in the management of events and situations. With funding provided by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, the Atlanta MMRS has begun phase two of the deployment of the DataFM technology within the entire MMRS jurisdiction. When completed during the summer of 2005 the DataFM technology will be made available to every Emergency Management Agency, Hospital, responder Ambulance service, county public health office, law enforcement, 911 Communications Center and Fire/EMS service in the entire 21 county Atlanta MMRS. Alert notification and emergency warning text messages can then be wirelessly delivered to any specific group or groups of agencies within the MMRS, providing an efficient and effecctive method for situation management information to be shared among the agencies.
